A Day at the Beach- imagery

A small child ecstatic and impatient
Races on the white coarse sand
The crash of waves on rock rings in her ears
With the steady beat of a metronome

She examines excitedly the patterns of shells- smooth and rigid
In the many hues of browns and creams
She throws them back to their home
And scampers off the find more

The hot sand burns her little, painted toes
So she dances in the cool, retreating tide
She leaps and bounds in the shallow shore
Splashing and having a good time

The salty fresh air washes over her
As she sits down with shovel and pail
Pebbles stick to her sore legs
As she prances and rolls about happily

The shoddy outlines of sand castles
Fade as the sky turns pink and orange
Her eyes become droopy
And everything becomes drowned out
By the sighs and groans of the sea
